The purpose of this project is to study the circulation of the waters in subglacial Lake Vostok and their interaction with overlying the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Arguably, the more interesting aspects of Lake Vostok science lie in its potential to possibly harbour unique, elementary life. The focus of this work, however, is on the physical properties of the lake, and specifically the dynamical ones. The methodological approach taken involves coupled ice-ocean numerical modeling and physical laboratory modeling studies. At later stages it is hoped that field observations undertaken by other researchers (via Lake drilling activities) may be able to provide some much-needed observational data on the physical and chemical properties of the lake water, and possibly even a few details on the circulation of waters within the lake.
